Following completion of Filthy Animals: Heist Simulator, I wanted to learn Unreal Engine 5, and have always had a desire to work on, or at least concept, a remake of one of my favorite Megadrive/Genesis games; Desert Strike.
For this project I wanted to be as faithful to the original game as possible, while significantly updating the visuals and some of the gameplay mechanics. This meant sourcing the sprite sheets from the original game and using those as reference for a number of models, such as buildings and vehicles.
Other features implemented are a full day/night cycle, including weather systems, along with a full implementation of Unreal's Lumen and Nanite systems.
Working on this project has been a learning experience and a bit of a technical challenge in figuring out the benefits of UE5's built-in feature set, as well as it limitations.
